Job-seeking permit after work permit (18d) end?

Hi,

I'm working under the 18d permit in Germany with a 3-year contract, which will end on 31/10/2024. However, the project I'm working on lasts till the end of May 2025. Therefore, my supervisor will extend my contract for six months. I have two questions:

  1. Given that my visa expires on 31/10/2024, with a new contract of only six months, can I extend my 18d permit for such a short-term contract?
  2. Given that I'm working part-time (66% paid of full position) under the 18d work permit, am I eligible for a 'job-seeking' visa after the end of my research contract as a benefit of the 18d permit holder?

Hello phuonght thank you for reaching out to us.
Regarding your first question, yes you can extend your residence permit, it will however only be extended for the period you have the contract i.e., 6months. Of course, you will need to hand in all the relevant documents to the immigration office for your extension. I have one follow up question is your research a multilateral program, that requires you to travel?
.
To answer your 2nd question, yes, in general you can apply for a residence permit for job seekers, you can receive this permit for up to 9 months to find a job. Please see more information under the section “What opportunities does the visa for research offer?” https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/visa-residence/types/other/resear…
You will have to apply for at your immigration office for the residence under §20 no.2 of the residence act for the job seeking permit.

Please let us know if you need further information.

Best wishes

Hi Yara, thank you for the information. Regarding your question, my research program is not a multilateral program. I'm hired as a research assistant to pursue my PhD degree!
