I am from Afghanistan and I am living in Germany for an year an half now. I came to Europe with Schengen state student visa but I decided to apply for asylum in Germany.
My residence permit is now based on "Ban for deportation" I obtained German Gray Travel document a year ago, at that time I did not show my Afghani Passport which valid till now.
Now I need my Afghani Passport, is it possible now to go to the immigration office to extend my residence permit and ask them to cancel my Gray travel document and I want to hold my Afghani passport afterward? Should I expect any legal penalties for this action?

If you have a national ban on deportation, the immigration authority will extend it if you still need protection and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) hasn't revoked the ban on deportation. If you hold a "Grey Passport", you can go to all the Schengen States without a visa and stay there for up to three months. BUT You can lose your residence permit in Germany if you travel to your home country while residing in Germany. If the Immigration Office learns about your trip, you can lose your protection and right of residence in Germany. If you decide to apply for cancellation of the gray passport, the clerk may get the impression that you are traveling to Afghanistan.
