Regarding the Inclusion of Internship and Working Student Experience in PR Eligibility

Hello,

I am writing to inquire about the eligibility criteria for Permanent Residency (PR) in Germany, particularly concerning the inclusion of experience gained as a working student and intern.

During my studies, I was employed as a working student and intern under a national D visa. In Germany, Master's graduates are eligible for PR after accumulating two years of professional experience.

I am keen to understand whether the duration of my employment as a working student and intern can be considered as part of these requisite two years.

For your reference, I worked full-time as an intern for 40 hours per week and as a working student for 25 hours per week. Additionally, I have contributed to the Renteversicherung (pension insurance) during this period.

Thanks

Hello hakankeles1994
thanks for reaching out.
As far as I understand correctly you finished your master studies in Germany already and are now a holder of an university degree.
.
The moment you obtain your degree and start to work as a skilled worker in Germany the time for permanent residence counts.
F.e. you studied from 2019-2022, got your degree in 2022 and startet to work as a skilled worker in 2022 as well, you could apply for permanent residence in 2024 as you only need two years before you can apply for permanent residence.
The time does not count retrospectively as you have not obtained your degree then and did not work as a skilled worker according to §18b AufenthG.
.
The waiting period is one among the other requirements for permanent residence. The time you have to pay pension insurance (in your case 24 months) might be fulfilled already.
Please request an insight into pension insurance.
.
You can have a look here, we listed further information on permanent residence in your case:

.
Wish you all the best

Thank you very much for your prompt response. While I appreciate your explanation, I believe my initial query was slightly different.

For context, I completed my Master's degree in September 2023. However, I began full-time employment and started contributing to the pension scheme (Rentenversicherung) from May 2023. Additionally, during my tenure as a working student, I had also contributed to the pension scheme for a period of 12 months.

Given that I was contributing to the pension scheme even before my graduation, I seek clarification on whether I need to fulfill the two-year requirement of full-time employment and pension contributions post-graduation, or if my prior contributions during my studies are considered towards this requirement.

I look forward to your guidance on this matter.

Hi again,
thanks for clarifying!
The time your full-time employment started in May 2023 (as a skilled worker) counts on both: 8 months general waiting time for the permanent residence as well as 8 months contribution to pension insurance.
The further contribution as a working student might be recognized as well. Be aware that in general contribution to pension insurance while studies only counts half. So only 6 month of 12 month will be considered. Therefore you can request the insight ("Rentenbescheid").
.
For further counseling on this topic you might want to reach out to MBE (migration counseling) or JMD (youth migration service): https://bamf-navi.bamf.de/en/Themen/Migrationsberatung/
.
Best regards
Daniela
