Receive support (financial and other) for moving to Germany

briellestrawberry • 29 March 2024

Hello there,

I'm a transgender woman from Bulgaria who had to even stop her already started education in Bulgaria which wasn't bad at all and now I have no other way but immigrating to a better country to try have a better life. Why? Since 21st of February 2023 Bulgaria banned changing legally gender and names on documents.  Which means, if you continue living in Bulgaria, you get to be discriminated a lot and everywhere because of your ID card, which you show even for the smallest thing and everyone knows everything about everyone because of that. You can't get a university diploma in your new names, you gotta stick to your old ones. How bad that could reflect on your future work experience and job searching, for example! Your high school diploma names cant be changed either. Nothing.....
And the worst is, I couldn't save a lot of money to immigrate somewhere, so I have some but its not like 10 000 EUR. I need to ask when I come to Germany, because as an EU citizen, that's very easy to do, luckily this one is,  what kind of financial support for life and accomodation can I get because I'm not guilty that we live in the EU (Bulgaria) and that Bulgaria, as an EU country, is allowed to put bans on whatever she wants. Hungary did put a whole LGBT ban too an year before Bulgaria. It's not safe to live like that, and yet we're considered an EU save country since we're in the EU.... It's not correct, it's lies, and it's not helpful to anyone, it's only making our lifes harder, knowing the fact how bad our economy is, people like me who don't live in rich families can barely save money, especially since i'm a transgender woman. Is there any kind of a way I could get some help when I move to Germany because the last year I tried to move to France and after that Germany alone, it was both unsuccessful. I want it this time to be right, and no more mistakes! I really hope for that!

Hello briellestrawberry, thank you for reaching out to us. I am sorry to hear about the discriminatory new laws in Bulgaria.
You can travel to Germany freely as you mentioned and live and work there. In general EU citizens will not receive state-aid in the first 3 months. So, you would have to search for a job that can cover your living expenses int he first three months of living in Germany. It might be a good idea to already look for a job from abroad. You can find more information on settling in Germany as an EU citizen. https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/working-in-germany/information-eu…
I would also recommend to seek out migration counselling once you arrive in Germany, they can also help you with your questions.
There are specialized counselling centers for LGBTQ rights and migration.
For example, the LSVD: https://www.lsvd.de/de/ct/1297-Die-LSVD-Rechtsberatung
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Best wishes for your move to Germany
