Have you finished the application procedure and appointment at the German embassy or consulate? Then you should have a processing number that was given to you when you booked the appointment for the embassy as well as after you have handed in all your documents.
To apply for a visa such as the short-term Schengen visa you have to fill in the application form for your specific visa type online, print the information and gather all the supporting documents that you need. Then you should book an appointment at your respective German consulate or embassy for the right visa. You should receive a so-called processing number. You will then get a confirmation of this interview via your mail. The process is slightly different depending on what type of visa you are applying for.
