Naturalisation

Bennelong • 8 January 2024

Hello there, I would like to ask you if in preparation for an application for German Citizenship via Naturalisation  as an European citizen I will be requested to show proof of membership to a health fund in Germany. I have been a resident in Berlin for 7 years and before applying for Naturalisation I would like to know if will I be asked to provide proof of Health insurance. I do not want to rush into a cheap  private insurance if it is not yet required. I would rather wait to see if I can gain access to a public insurance in Germany after having obtained Nationality. I have never relied on any social service help and I am at retirement age and self sufficient.

Thank you for your kind answer.

Hello Bennelong, thank you for your question. In general when living in Germany you will need health insurance. As far as I know they will not ask you to provide proof of health insurance. I would however, since you are at retirement age, advise you to seek out counseling that can help you with the naturalization process if needed.
You can also see a list of requirements on our page: https://handbookgermany.de/en/citizenship
In Berlin the Caritas offers counselling for naturalization: https://www.caritas-berlin.de/beratungundhilfe/berlin/flucht-und-migrat…
If you happen to live somewhere else please let me know.
Best wishes
