I need to go for a medical check up but I can’t because I am not receiving money from anyone and I am not working yet. I went to AOK for health insurance so I can go to hospital, they said they can’t enroll me because I am not working or receiving money from jobcenter.I came from Ukraine but am I Nigerian and I don’t know what to do. I have been living here with the help of my friend in the living house I am staying. Please, help me. Thank you.

Hello jacobobehi, thank you for reaching out to us. Yes in general you need health insurance before going to seek medical care. The type of medical insurance you can have also depends on your current status, you mentioned that you have fled from the Ukraine and you are a Nigerian citizen. If you had a permanent resident or refugee status and have fled after the outbreak of the war in the Ukraine, you are also eligible for the temporary protection and can therefore also receive health insurance. Yes, in general the job center is also responsible for covering your health insurance

.
If you have applied for asylum then the health care depends on how long you have been in Germany and in what federal state you live in. In general the Social Amt will be responsible for that you can read more information on our website here: https://handbookgermany.de/en/healthcareforrefugees
.
Finally there are also organizations that can help you if you do not have any medical insurance. https://www.malteser.de/menschen-ohne-krankenversicherung.html
Are you currently in Berlin?
open-med-Ambulanz Zehlendorf has also specializes in helping out people with no insurance.

Happy to hear back from you soon.
