How to keep your residence permit?

Haqmal • 19 April 2024

Hello everyone,

I have research residence permit, I have came to my country for collecting data and field research since last December, and some people said to don't face problem you have to visit Germany every six months. Now I plan to come Germany and  my question is for how long can I stay here (Germany) so that I don’t face any problem with my residence permit.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

regards,

Hello Haqmal, thank you for reaching out to us. Yes, in case you leave Germany for over 6 months without the permission of the immigration office your residence permit will become invalid.
As far as I know there is no specific days/months you have to stay in Germany before you can leave again. However, I would advice to seek out the permission of the immigration office so you can leave longer than the 6months, this would have to be given to you in writing. It would be best to also contact your research position so they can document that your job required you to do field work outside of Germany. If you are unsure you can always seek out a counseling center near you.
Happy to help if you have further questions.
Best wishes

Hi Haqmal, I have some additional important updated information to add. Please note that you cannot leave Germany for more than 6months within 12months. Meaning if you leave for 6months then you will have to stay in Germany for 6months before you can leave again. I would strongly suggest that you receive the permission of your local immigration office before leaving for your field research again.
Best wishes.
