Citizenship conditions | Together in Germany

Hi there,

I have been living in Germany more than 7 years, I am married to an EU citizen more than 6 years and got a permanent residence in 2022. This year I would like to apply for citizenship and I have some questions for you:

1) What happens to my citizenship process if I get a divorce after the application? (Btw I have been working since 2018)
2) Do I have to show a "Hausvertrag"?
3) Do I have to have B1 or B2 German knowledge. Just a paper showing that I finished my German course is enough, or do I have to take a certain test?

Dear waslos, thank you for contacting us. In reference to your questions, here is my advice:

1) If you have a permanent residence, you can also apply for citizenship in the event of a divorce. If you get divorced after applying for citizenship, the process of your application can change. When you apply for the citizenship, you will be informed that in case of changes, the application process can start from the beginning.

2) When you apply for citizenship, you will have to bring to the first appointment all required documents: https://handbookgermany.de/en/citizenship
If you have to attach more documents (for example Mietvertrag or Untermietvertrag) they will let you know.
From my experience: you have more chances to get the citizenship when you have Mietvertrag.

3) You need to add to the application the B1 certificate that you have passed.

Thank you for your answer, I don't know if you know but divorce takes time here in Germany. So I don't want to take a risk and wait until it happens, I don't understand why I can't start my application now. In the end, I have been living and working here myself so I am eligible to apply for citizenship, I would like to understand the logic behind it.

Plus, unfortunately, the website is not so clear about the list of what is needed. I think there should be one answer, do they want to see one or not, right?

About B1, your answer is not clear, so my course paper is enough, or do I have to take a certain test?
