Changing purpose of living

@robinahmed • 15 January 2024

Hi good afternoon,

I am leaving in Germany for over ten years as a political asylum holder.
I have been working here full time for 8 years.

My question is whether I won't have political problems in my country in the future!  And I want to continue live and work here in Germany,
so is that possible to Convert my residence permit for political asylum into a work residence permit?

I would be very grateful if you could let me know, Thank you.

Hello @robinahmed, thank you for reaching out to us.
You mention that you have political asylum, I am assuming your have the following residency
§25.1 AufenthG. Please note if you return to your home country while having political asylum in Germany, you risk losing your protection status.
.
If that is the case, and since you have been living and working in Germany for a long time you can apply for a permanent residence permit and even for German citizenship. We have more information on the application process here:
https://handbookgermany.de/en/permanent-residence
https://handbookgermany.de/en/citizenship
.
Theoretically, you can also switch to a temporary residence permit for work (as a skilled worker or Blue Card).
Once you have changed your residency from political asylum to another one, you can return to your country for a certain period (usually 6 months, unless you are a German citizen). However, I cannot tell you if you will have political problems in your home country in the future, this is something you will need to assess.
It is best to visit an advice center, they will go through these options with you. You can search for one using the https://bamf-navi.bamf.de/en/Themen/Migrationsberatung
.

Feel free to get in touch if you have further questions.
Warm wishes
