What is the best way to get a job for someone outside the EU

viviana.meneg • 14 February 2023

If I am from canada and I would like to move to germany, I dont need a working visa but I need a residence permit to find a job, and I need a residence permit to stay in Germany more than 90 days.

How does the process work? will the employer guarantee a contract prior to the residence permit registration, or will I need some other documents to accept the job offer?

Hello viviana.meneg,

Hello, thanks for your question. I have found the following information on the German embassy webpage. Which might be useful.

“Canadian citizens can submit their application at the competent alien’s authority after arrival in Germany. There is no obligation to apply for a German visa before leaving Canada. Only in cases where an employment is intended to begin directly after arrival in Germany (e.g., work, study, internship), we recommend that a visa (which includes the work permit) is being issued in advance. Employment cannot be started before having the obligatory permit.”

So if you already have a job offer your job will start soon after your arrival in Germany, I would recommend that you already apply for a work visa and permit in Canada through the German embassy. Otherwise, the process is that you will come to Germany visa free for 90 days, within those 90 days you have to gather all the documents that you need and apply for a residence permit at your local immigration office. Please book an appointment as soon as possible in some cities the waiting time can be months.
I hope this information was useful. If you need any other info. Please let me know, I’m always happy to help.
All the best for your move to Germany.
warm wishes
Yara
