Requirement to know German to move to Germany as a Highly Skilled Migrant

automation_engineer • 22 December 2022

Dear Sir/Madam,

I intend to move to Germany as a Highly Skilled Migrant. But I can't speak German recently. Would my application for a work permit visa be approved in this situation? I know to live in Germany talking German is essential. But I can learn it day by day after I move there.

Thank you for your support in advance.

Best regards

Dear automation_engineer, thank you for your question and apologies for the late reply I have been on a break.
To receive a visa for skilled migrants you will need the following documents along with the standard documents for a national type D visa.
• Proof that you have completed a vocational training programme recognized in Germany or hold a university degree recognized in Germany.
• An employment contract or an offer for a qualified job from a company or organization in Germany.
• If you are over 45 years of age, you must also have adequate retirement provision or prove that you will earn at least 46,860 € gross per year (as of 2021).

If you have received a job offer that does not require German, your employer can state and have it in writing. In case the embassy asks for proof of German you can hand that to them. However, German is not a specific requirement for this type of visa.
You can read more about the visa process here: https://handbookgermany.de/en/visa-skilled-workers
I am always happy to help if you have any further questions.

Best wishes for your move to Germany
