I need translator for Job Center

Meldra • 11 February 2023

I moved from Latvia and I can`t speak German. I applied Job Center for language course etc.. Job Center demanded many documents about me from authorities of Latvia. I provided all requested documents by translate from authorities of Latvia. But looks like  Job Center advisors has  still  many hesitation about me. I think that I didn't explain myself curroctly and for that reason the process extended to much .

For these reasons I need translator for  Latvian or English.

But I can't afford cost of translators fees. How can find or demand a translator for free .

Hi Meldra, thank you for reaching out.
Yes dealing with the JobCenter can often be tricky. If you let me know what city you live in I can see if I can search for some free translators that can accompany you to the jobCenter. Hopefully you can receive a language course soon.

Hi Meldra, so I found a couple of places where you can ask. There is this forum where you can ask for accompaniment to the office: https://www.elo-forum.org/forums/suche-biete-begleitung-zur-arge-jobcen…
It is unfortunately mostly in German. But it might be useful.
You can also ask the JobCenter that you need a staff member that speaks English to clarify your needs. They are obliged to check if there is any staff that can speak sufficient English or Latvian to help you.
I will also send you a private message with some more addresses that you can contact in Bochum that should be able to help you further.
Please let me know if you were able to receive help. Otherwise I can take a look and find other places that you could contact.

Yara _Community Manager Hi Yara, I sent you private message. I requested translator for new appointment from Job Center. Now I'm waiting for response. And I'm not sure if there is unfair or discriminatory attitude because I have no idea about standard Job Center apply process.

Hi Meldra, thank you for your private message! I will reply as soon as possible. I wanted to inform the community that often times when you do not know German or the German JobCenter system very well then it is more likely that you can face difficulties and stress with the JobCenter. That is why I published this study. We can other questions that are similar to yours. Sometimes, it's good to know that you are not alone struggling to deal with these things.

Unfortunately, it is often the case that EU citizen have a much harder time with the JobCenter, especially, when they do not speak German. A recent study has also found this if anyone in the community is interested in this topic
You can access the study here: https://www.dezim-institut.de/publikationen/publikation-detail/we-treat…
Therefore, it is important to receive advice and help if you feel like you are being treated unfairly.

Best wishes
Yara
